Bio ohne Kompromisse – Sikkim erhält den One-World Award

Mitte der 90er Jahre hatte der damals noch unbedeutende landwirtschaftliche Beamte Khorlo Bhutia eine Vision: er sah die Zukunft seines geliebten, gebirgigen Sikkim biologisch. Und zwar nicht zu 10 oder 20 Prozent, sondern zu 100 Prozent. Diesen Floh setzte er seinem befreundeten Ministerpräsident Pawan Chamling ins Ohr. Und das jede Woche, immer eindringlicher und in immer kräftigeren Farben.

Massensterben in Assam, Entscheidung für Bio in Sikkim

Einige Jahre zogen ins Land, bis 2003 im benachbarten Assam beim großflächigen Spritzen von Insektiziden etwas aus dem Ruder lief. Jedenfalls fielen damals nicht nur die Insekten massenhaft vom Himmel, sondern auch die Vögel. Und überhaupt starb in der Zeit so Einiges. Dieses Massensterben in der Nahrungskette sollte der Auslöser für die weltweit einzigartige Bio-Karriere des kleinen nordöstlichen indischen Bundesstaates werden. Denn der Ministerpräsident rief die kompromisslose Umstellung der gesamten Landwirtschaft auf Bio-Landbau als prioritäres Staatsziel aus. Die beiden Herren Chamling und Bhutia überließen in den Jahren der „Biologisierung“ nichts dem Zufall. Die Bäuerinnen und das gesamte Land wurden Schritt für Schritt „biofit“ gemacht. Der Neujahrstag 2016 wurde zum großen Freudentag in Sikkim, denn mit Jahresbeginn waren alle 65.000 Bäuerinnen des Landes nach den internationalen Bio-Standards biozertifiziert. Gut eineinhalb Jahre später sollte wieder ein Bio-Freudentag werden. Ministerpräsident Shri Pawan Chamling nahm im Allgäuer Legau vor 700 begeisterten Festgästen den von IFOAM-Organics International, dem Dachverband der weltweiten Bio-Landbaubewegung (800 Mitgliedsorganisationen und Institutionen in 120 Ländern), initiierten und von Rapunzel Naturkost vergebenen One-World-Award entgegen. Und zwar für das herausragende Engagement und die außergewöhnlichen Initiativen im Sinne einer positiven Globalisierung. Ein solches Wirken der Regierung bietet echte Zukunftsperspektiven für die Menschen in der strukturell benachteiligten Region und wirkt zudem weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus. Die bewegende Laudatio hielt die indische Alternativ-Nobelpreisträgerin Vandana Shiva, die als Umweltaktivistin und Öko-Feministin weltweite Anerkennung genießt.

Bio als eine Chance der Globalisierung

Diese Welt besser und fairer zu machen und als Lebensgrundlage für alle zu erhalten sind die treibenden Kräfte für den Regierungschef und seinen Sektionschef. Aber nicht nur für die beiden Herren, sondern auch die Initiatoren des One-World-Awards denken in diese Richtung: „Die Menschheit steht heute vor der Herausforderung, die Chancen der Globalisierung so zu nutzen, dass sie in der Tat mehr bedeuten kann als eine Profitmaximierung auf Kosten einer überwiegenden Mehrzahl der Weltbevölkerung. Deshalb basiert die Zielsetzung des Awards auf den vier Säulen der Nachhaltigkeit: Ökologie, Ökonomie, Soziales und Kultur. Bio-Entwicklungshilfe für Österreich

Nach den Feierlichkeiten und einer Tour durch Deutschland werden Herr Bhutia und eine hohe Ministerialdelegation auf Einladung von organic17 nach Österreich kommen. Wir haben uns gedacht, dass das mit 20 Prozent Bio-Anteil europameisterliche Österreich schon ein bisschen visionäre Entwicklungshilfe von den „Bionieren“ vertragen kann. Nach den mathematischen Grundregeln fehlen auf visionäre 100 Prozent noch beachtliche 80 Prozent.

Organic without compromise – Sikkim receives the One-World Award

In the middle of the nineties the agricultural official Khorlo Bhutia had a vision: he saw the future of his beloved, mountainous Sikkim biologically. Not to 10 or 20 percent, but to 100 percent. He put “this flea” in the ear to his Prime Minister, Pawan Chamling. And that every week, always more intensive and in ever stronger colors.

Mass deaths in Assam, decision for bio in Sikkim

Some years moved into the country, until 2003 in neighboring Assam with the large-scale spraying of insecticides ran out of control. At that time not only the insects fell heavily from the sky, but also the birds. And at the time there was a lot going on. This massive food crisis in the food chain should be the trigger for the world’s unique organic career in the small north-east Indian state. The Prime Minister called for the unconditional conversion of the entire agricultural sector into organic farming as a priority for the state. The two masters, Chamling and Bhutia, did not leave anything to chance in the years of „biologization“. The farmers and the entire country were made step by step “fit” for the organic way. The New Year’s Day 2016 became a great day of joy in Sikkim, as all 65,000 farmers of the country were biocertified according to the international organic standards. A small country as a model for the world – Sikkim receives the One World Award 2017

Well one and a half years later should be again a historic day. Minister President Shri Pawan Chamling took part in the one-world-award, which was initiated by IFOAM-Organics International, the umbrella organization of the world-wide organic movement (800 member organizations and institutions in 120 countries) and from Rapunzel Naturkost awarded One-World-Award 2017 in the German Legau: For the outstanding commitment and exceptional initiatives in the sense of positive globalization. Such a government action offers real perspectives for the people in the structurally disadvantaged region and also goes far beyond national borders. The moving laudation was held by the Indian Vandana Shiva, who enjoys global recognition as an environmental activist and eco-feminist.

Organic as an opportunity for globalization

Making this world better and fairer and preserving it as a living basis for all are the driving forces for the head of government and his section chief. But not only for the two gentlemen, but also for the initiators of the One World Award: „Today, humanity faces the challenge of using the opportunities of globalization in such a way that it can actually mean more than only profit maximization at the expense of a large majority of the world’s population. For this reason, the award is based on the four pillars of sustainability: ecology, economics, social affairs and culture. Organic development aid for Austria

After the festivities and a tour of Germany Mr. Bhutia and a high ministerial delegation will visit Austria at the invitation of organic17. We have thought that in Austria a bit of visionary development aid can already be tolerated by the organic-world champions. According to the mathematical basic rules Austria is still missing 80 per cent to receive the target of 100 percent.
